With particles sized between U.S. #50 and #100 mesh (approximately 150–300 microns), 50/100 fused silica grain strikes an ideal balance between shell strength, permeability, and surface finish. Its clean, angular grains enhance slurry embedment and support even shell buildup in intermediate or backup coats. This grade typically exceeds 99.9–99.95% SiO₂ and has minimal iron and cristobalite content, making it a highly pure, chemically stable option that resists cracking during autoclaving and high-temperature pours. The low thermal expansion of fused silica adds dimensional stability, while its compatibility with both colloidal silica and ethyl silicate binders ensures consistent slurry performance.
